Reaching our potential is a process that includes understanding our Nervous System, acquiring a place that is safe enough to move out of our defenses and protective parts that have adapted to take the lead in times of uncertainty, fear, and overwhelm. Protective aspects include reactivity, dissociation, anger, rage, avoidance, shutdown, to name a few. Healing requires Coregulation, where we are free to be honest, and practices increase Self-compassion, Self-confidence, and curiosity become more prevalent than our automatic reactions.
Attachment patterns and ways we've learned to manage threats to our survival as babies, young kids, and/or during traumatic experiences, often stay around into and through adulthood. These Adaptive Survival strategies that save us when we are young, begin to become the 'current and presenting issues' that bring folks to therapy. Yet, these patterns tend to be unconscious, driving behavior that is, we believe, something we can't control. In fact, these survival strategies can become more dangerous and relationally challenging in our adult lives. Until we learn to listen, titrate our ability to tolerate distress, and feel the stuckness that these parts often hold in our body and energy flow, all the somatic holding patterns, and blocks us from feeling pain (or ANYTHING) from the vital mind-body-spirit connection.
Once we have compassion and feel safe enough to move into and simply get closer, for longer, to the things we have unconsciously avoided, reactions that are deeply and strongly ingrained. Fear is so prevalent these days in a society where that is what surrounds us, it takes willingness to move inside, and be with a safe and coregulative other (therapist). Liminal Horizons prides ourselves for welcoming and engaging as slowly as needed to ensure there is room to create space, titrate the dorsal aspects we have had to stay shutdown to survive. We together, the invitation to notice and observe, sense and then retreat from what is new and feels unsafe, and to reflect on our experiences. We utilize Somatic & Attachment-Focused, or SAFE EMDR (from Personal Transformation Institute), Parts Work and IFS, Positive Psychology, Energy Psychology, including EFT (Tapping), Polyvagal Theory, Felt Sense Polyvagal Model (FSMP) and focusing, and using the foundation of neurophysiological states, we learn to appreciate the intention of our survival strategies, to protect us from the pain of what is too shameful to speak. In therapy, work with our own system. Until now.
